What Does the Insurance Actually Cover?
Never accept the single word “insured”. Ask for three numbers: the excess you pay per claim, the third-party liability limit, and the list of exclusions that void cover. Common voids across the market include an unlicensed driver, driving off legal roads, and undeclared additional drivers.
On requirements: bring a valid driving license from home plus an International Driving Permit where required, and your passport for verification. Which Quiet Add-ons Move the Total Most?
Four of them: delivery beyond the Kuta-Seminyak-airport corridor, a driver add-on from $35 per day, overtime and drop-location changes, and the small but real Bali Mandara toll at Rp14,000 per crossing for cars. None is illegitimate — the problem is only when they surface after you have paid.
- Delivery: typically free inside the Kuta-Seminyak-airport corridor; a villa in Ubud or Uluwatu usually carries a stated fee. Ask for the exact figure for your address before booking.
- Driver: an English-speaking driver on a self-drive class starts around $35 per day; chauffeured MPV classes already include one in the rate.
- Overtime and drops: returning late or handing the car back in a different area is where undisclosed fees breed. Ask the hourly overtime figure and the one-way fee up front.
- Toll: Bali Mandara costs Rp14,000 for cars (the rate since April 2024). Trivial per crossing, worth budgeting if you loop airport, Nusa Dua and Sanur daily.
